Skeleton is a minor, albeit memorable, character in J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, The Hobbit. He isn't a living being, but rather the skeletal remains of a dwarf found within the halls of Thranduil's palace in Mirkwood.

Bilbo Baggins, imprisoned by the Wood-elves along with Thorin's company, discovers the skeleton during his exploration of the palace. The dwarf, identified only by his belt buckle, met his demise within the Elvenking's domain, though the circumstances of his death are never explicitly revealed.

Skeleton's presence serves as a grim reminder of the perils faced in Mirkwood and acts as foreshadowing. His end suggests dangers beyond spiders and the bewitchment of the forest, and reinforces the idea that the Elvenking, while powerful, does not always protect those within his realm. The discovery also fuels the dwarves' desire to escape, even at great risk.
